Director: Megan Park
Turning eighteen rarely comes with a visit from your own future, but that is exactly what happens to Elliott in My Old Ass, Megan Park's 2024 comedy-drama about the summer before everything changes.
What is My Old Ass about?
Elliott is a free-spirited teenager counting down the days until she leaves her family's cranberry farm for college, treating her last summer at home as little more than a formality to get through. On her eighteenth birthday, a mushroom trip with friends unexpectedly puts her face to face with a wisecracking, thirty-nine-year-old version of herself, who has traveled back with a handful of blunt warnings about choices Elliott is about to make. At first Elliott brushes off the encounter as a hallucination, but the advice keeps echoing in her head as the summer unfolds, especially once she meets someone her older self insisted she avoid. Caught between wanting to control her future and wanting to actually live in the present, Elliott is forced to reconsider her relationships with her parents, her siblings, and the people she's about to leave behind. The film follows her final weeks at home as that collision between two versions of herself reshapes what she thought this summer was supposed to be.
Cast & crew
Maisy Stella plays Elliott with an easy, restless energy that carries the film's coming-of-age tone, while Aubrey Plaza brings sharp comic timing and unexpected tenderness to the older Elliott who shows up uninvited. Percy Hynes White and Maddie Ziegler round out a cast built around Elliott's tight circle of family and friends.
Context & significance
My Old Ass premiered at the Sundance Film Festival before its 2024 release and marks writer-director Megan Park's follow-up to her acclaimed debut feature. The film leans into a familiar time-travel device but uses it mainly as a way to examine how a person's sense of who they are can shift dramatically between eighteen and thirty-nine, rather than as a plot mechanism to solve.
