Director: Chiang Wei-Liang, You Qiao Yin
Something feral is loose inside the walls of a run-down boarding house in Mongrel, a 2025 horror feature from co-directors Chiang Wei-Liang and You Qiao Yin, made across France, Singapore and Taiwan. What begins as a cruel prank against a chained dog spirals into a nightmare none of the tenants can wake from.
What is Mongrel about?
A tenant's habit of teasing a chained-up dog with scraps of raw meat ends in violence, and the animal's death is meant to close the matter. It does not. Another resident begins dreaming that the dog has returned, and one by one the boarding house's occupants find themselves cut off from the outside world as something feral takes hold of the building. Wanlop Rungkamjad, Lu Yi-ching, Hong Yu Hong and Atchara Suwan play tenants whose petty grievances and isolation leave them badly unprepared for what closes in around them overnight.
Cast & crew
The ensemble is anchored by Wanlop Rungkamjad and veteran performer Lu Yi-ching, whose weary, lived-in presence gives the cramped boarding-house setting a real sense of history. Hong Yu Hong, Atchara Suwan and Guo Shu-wei round out a cast of tenants whose small cruelties and grudges become part of the horror itself, under the joint direction of Chiang Wei-Liang and You Qiao Yin.
Context & significance
A rare tri-national co-production spanning France, Singapore and Taiwan, Mongrel runs a compact 88 minutes and holds an IMDb rating of 4.2, positioning it as a niche genre discovery rather than a mainstream horror hit. Its regional setting and low-budget, boarding-house scale place it closer to festival horror circuits than to studio releases.
