Moana returns for a second voyage in this 2024 animated sequel, called back across the ocean by ancestors whose message reopens waters no one has dared cross in generations.
What is Moana 2 about?
Years after her first crossing, Moana is living out her role as wayfinder for her people when a sudden, unexplained call from her seafaring ancestors interrupts everything. The message points toward far-flung corners of Oceania and waters that have been avoided for good reason, forcing her to assemble a crew and set sail once more with far less certainty about what waits at the end of the journey. Old companions return and new ones join the boat, and the voyage quickly turns into something stranger and more dangerous than the charted routes she grew up learning, testing how much of her confidence as a leader survives contact with the unknown.
Cast & crew
Auli'i Cravalho reprises the title role, sailing alongside Dwayne Johnson as the demigod Maui. Hualālai Chung, Rose Matafeo, David Fane, Awhimai Fraser, Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda, and Temuera Morrison round out the returning and new voices aboard the canoe.

Directed by David G. Derrick Jr. alongside Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller, the sequel expands the mythology introduced in the first film, drawing further on Pacific Islander wayfinding traditions and oral storytelling for its sense of place and stakes. New musical numbers carry much of the emotional weight, picking up the earlier film's blend of ocean adventure and coming-of-age pressure while giving Moana a larger crew and a wider map to work with this time around.
