What is Love and Monsters about?
Joel has spent most of a decade sheltering in an underground colony while giant creatures roam what used to be an ordinary American landscape. A crackling radio call from a girlfriend sheltering roughly eighty miles away is enough to push him aboveground for the first time in years, even though he has none of the survival training everyone around him takes for granted. The overland route puts him in the path of towering insects, oversized amphibians and other mutated wildlife, and forces him to learn on the move rather than retreat back to safety. A scrappy dog and a pair of road-hardened wanderers join him along the way, each teaching him something about staying alive outside a bunker. The film plays its set pieces for both tension and comedy, treating hunger, bad timing and plain inexperience as just as dangerous as any creature encounter, and it keeps its focus on an unlikely hero finding out what he is capable of once survival stops being optional.
