A junkyard discovery turns into a weapon nobody understands in Kin, a science-fiction chase movie built around two brothers on the run.
What is Kin about?
Fourteen-year-old Eli scavenges scrap metal from a condemned building to help support his adoptive father, and in the process finds a strange device he can't identify. When his older brother Jimmy comes home from prison owing money to people who don't forgive debts, the two end up on the road together, with Eli's find tagging along in his bag. As federal agents and a crew of armed strangers start closing in from opposite directions, the brothers realize the object Eli picked up is worth far more — and far more dangerous — than either of them guessed.
About the cast
Myles Truitt plays Eli, the younger brother whose find sets the story in motion, alongside Jack Reynor as Jimmy, fresh out of prison and trying to protect him. James Franco, Zoë Kravitz, Carrie Coon and Dennis Quaid fill out the adults orbiting the brothers' journey, with Jonathan Cherry and Mark O'Brien rounding out the cast.
Context & significance
Kin was co-directed by brothers Jonathan Baker and Josh Baker, who expanded their own earlier short film into this feature. Made in the United States, it keeps its science-fiction elements at arm's length for much of the running time, framing the story first as a road movie about two brothers before letting the stranger implications of Eli's discovery take over. The film keeps its budget-conscious effects grounded in practical stunts and a handful of striking set pieces, leaning on the chemistry between its two leads rather than spectacle to carry the middle stretch of the story.
