An aging Parisian tower block becomes a death trap in Infested, a claustrophobic 2023 French horror film built around a swarm of fast-breeding spiders.
What is Infested about?
Kaleb lives in a rundown apartment building on the edge of Paris, keeping exotic pets as a way of feeling in control of a life that otherwise offers him little. When a rare spider he brings home escapes and begins reproducing at an alarming rate, the infestation spreads through vents, stairwells, and shared walls faster than anyone in the building can react. As exits are sealed off and neighbors who barely spoke to each other are forced into the same corridors, the residents have to set aside old grudges to survive a threat multiplying inside their own walls. The building itself, already neglected by landlords and city authorities alike, becomes as much a character in the siege as the creatures crawling through it.
About the cast
Théo Christine leads the ensemble as Kaleb, joined by Sofia Lesaffre, Finnegan Oldfield, Jérôme Niel, Lisa Nyarko, Marie-Philomène Nga, Emmanuel Bonami, and Abdellah Moundy as the building's residents.
Context & significance
Director Sébastien Vaniček sets the film almost entirely inside one aging housing block, using its tight corridors and worn-out infrastructure to keep the threat close and inescapable. The building's disrepair is treated as part of the horror, not just its backdrop, reflecting the everyday neglect familiar to residents of similar housing on the outskirts of French cities. At 106 minutes, the film builds from a single frightened pet owner to a full-scale building-wide siege, keeping its cast largely confined to stairwells, apartments, and rooftops as the spiders take over.
