Some films measure time in decades rather than days, letting a single relationship reveal itself slowly through repeated, changing visits. In the Summers unfolds entirely across a handful of childhood vacations, each one a little different from the last.
What is In The Summers about?
Every year, two sisters travel to Las Cruces, New Mexico, to spend the summer with their father in a house that feels both familiar and slightly foreign each time they return. He loves them fiercely and unpredictably, capable of warmth and playfulness one moment and instability the next, and the girls learn to read his moods the way other kids read weather. As the summers pass, the sisters grow from small children into teenagers and then young adults, and their relationship with their father shifts accordingly, colored by what they now understand that they couldn't as kids. The film moves through these visits without a conventional plot engine, instead building a portrait of a fractured but genuine bond that neither sister can simply walk away from, even as they start to see their father with clearer, harder eyes.
Cast & crew
Musician-turned-actor Residente plays the father with a performance that resists easy categorization as either villain or victim, letting both tenderness and volatility coexist in the same scenes. Sasha Calle and Lio Mehiel share the role of the older sister across different ages, while Leslie Grace appears as the younger sister's older self, with the ensemble cast tracking the same two characters through years of change without losing continuity of feeling.
Context & significance
Writer-director Alessandra Lacorazza builds the film around the passage of time itself, using a structure of separated summers rather than a continuous timeline to mirror how children actually experience an inconsistent parent, in fragments rather than a steady arc. The New Mexico setting, rendered in warm, sun-heavy cinematography, becomes almost a character in its own right, tied to memory and to a father the sisters only ever see in this one place.
