Eternia gets a fresh coat of paint in He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, a 2021 American animated series that reimagines the classic toy-line hero for a younger, faster-moving audience. Across half-hour episodes, a teenage Adam and a crew of outsiders stumble onto the ancient power of Grayskull and learn what it costs to wield it.
What is He-Man and the Masters of the Universe about?
Adam is a teenager with no idea what he is capable of until a relic of immense power crosses his path. The Power of Grayskull, a legendary force tied to the fate of the kingdom, does not simply make him stronger; it binds him to a duty he never asked for. Around him gathers a squad of misfits, each with their own reasons for distrusting authority and each changed by the same energy that transforms Adam into He-Man. Standing against them is Skeletor, a schemer who wants Grayskull's power for himself and will burn Eternia to get it. The series builds its story arc episode by episode, with the team learning to fight together, mastering new forms, and discovering that destiny is something they have to grow into rather than inherit. Showrunner Rob David steers the tone toward bright, kinetic action balanced with team-bonding humour, keeping the stakes clear for family viewing while giving the mythology room to expand.
About the cast
The voice ensemble is led by Yuri Lowenthal, a veteran of animation and video-game voice work, alongside David Kaye, Kimberly Brooks, Antony Del Rio, Judy Alice Lee, Ben Diskin, Grey DeLisle and Roger Craig Smith. The series leans on their experience to give its heroes and villains distinct, energetic personalities.
Context & significance
Masters of the Universe began life as a toy line in the early eighties and has been revived on screen more than once since then. This 2021 version is a CG-animated reboot aimed squarely at children and families, sitting in the action, adventure, fantasy and science-fiction genres with an episode length of around twenty-five minutes. It is a separate production from other recent He-Man projects, with its own continuity, a younger Adam and a redesigned Skeletor. The show is written so that newcomers can start from the first episode without any background.
