Set in a nameless corner of the English countryside during the last days of open-field farming, Harvest follows Walter Thirsk, an outsider who has spent years earning the trust of a close-knit community. When a plume of smoke rises over the manor house and strangers appear on the horizon, old suspicions boil over, and the villagers turn on each other and on the newcomers camped nearby. As surveyors arrive to redraw the land into private plots, the film traces how fear, rumor and self-interest dismantle a way of working the earth that had endured for centuries. Athina Rachel Tsangari builds the story less around plot twists than around mood, texture and the slow erosion of trust between people who once depended on one another to survive.
Cast & crew
Caleb Landry Jones anchors the film as Walter, caught between loyalty to the only home he has known and his outsider status within it. Harry Melling and Rosy McEwen play villagers whose alliances shift as the harvest and the community both begin to fail, while Arinzé Kene, Thalissa Teixeira and Frank Dillane round out an ensemble built for close, communal scenes rather than individual star turns.
Context & significance
Adapted from Jim Crace's Booker-shortlisted novel, Harvest reached festival screens in 2024 and was shot largely with natural light to match its unhurried, pastoral rhythm. Its story of enclosure, the historical process by which shared farmland was fenced off into private property, gives the film a quiet undertow about who gets to belong to a place and who decides.
