Three retirees pushed to the edge of their savings decide that if a bank can walk away with their money, they can walk away with some of the bank's.

What is Going in Style about?

The film follows a trio of lifelong friends whose retirement plans collapse when a corporate maneuver strips their pension out from under them. Facing bills they can no longer cover and no legal path to get the money back, the men start weighing options nobody would have taken seriously a few months earlier. What begins as a joke over coffee turns into research, then planning, then an actual attempt to rob the very bank that set their situation in motion. Along the way the group has to learn skills none of them ever needed in their working lives, and the mismatch between their age and their ambition supplies much of the film's comic engine. The heist itself becomes less about the money changing hands and more about three men refusing to accept that the system gets the last word.

About the cast

Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Alan Arkin lead the cast as the three friends at the center of the plan, with Ann-Margret, John Ortiz, Peter Serafinowicz, Joey King, and Kenan Thompson filling out the supporting roles around them.

Context & significance

Directed by Zach Braff, Going in Style sits in the heist-comedy tradition, using a familiar setup — ordinary people pulling off an extraordinary crime — but built around characters well past the age that genre usually casts. Released in 2017, it pairs its comedy with a real complaint about pensions disappearing overnight, which gives the lighter scenes something to push against. The pacing stays tight across a fairly short runtime, keeping the plan, the setbacks, and the payoff moving without much padding.
