Director: Nick Cassavetes

A father's worst night becomes a years-long descent into a desert cult in this brutal, sun-bleached crime thriller.

What is God Is A Bullet about?

Vice detective Bob Hightower comes home to find his ex-wife dead and his young daughter missing, taken by a cult that vanishes without a trace. When the official investigation stalls, Hightower quits the force rather than wait, choosing instead to disappear into the cult's world himself. His only way in is Case Hardin, a woman who escaped the group years earlier and knows exactly how far its leader will go to keep what he takes. The two form an uneasy, dangerous partnership as Hightower edges closer to the people who destroyed his family.

Cast & crew

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau plays Hightower with a grim, methodical anger that fuels the film's long middle stretch, while Maika Monroe's Case Hardin carries much of the story's emotional weight as someone forced back into the trauma she barely survived. Jamie Foxx appears as the cult's leader in a role built on menace rather than screen time.

Context & significance

Adapted from Boston Teran's novel of the same name and released in 2023, the film leans into a stark, unglamorized portrayal of cult dynamics rather than treating them as background texture for a revenge plot. Director Nick Cassavetes stretches the runtime past two and a half hours, giving the investigation room to feel exhausting and procedural rather than fast-moving.
