A quiet man walks into a robbery with no explanation, and Future Is a Lonely Place spends the rest of its runtime working out why.

What is Future Is A Lonely Place about?

Frank has no record and no obvious motive, yet he attacks a money transporter and calmly turns himself in afterward, leaving investigators with a case that makes no sense on paper. Inside prison he crosses paths with Fuad, a man protected by his own clan and deeply involved in the yard's drug trade, and starts working his way into that operation rather than staying clear of it. The move drags him into the standing tension between German and Arab inmates, a rivalry he cannot simply opt out of once he is inside it. A prison guard named Susanna becomes the one person he can talk to honestly, unaware that she is tangled up with Fuad's business in ways that complicate everything Frank is trying to do. Only gradually does the reason for Frank's opening act come into focus: a family tragedy on the road, and a driver who was never held responsible for it.

About the cast

Lucas Gregorowicz carries the film as Frank, with Denis Moschitto and Katharina Schüttler in key roles as Fuad and Susanna. Ronald Kukulies, Zejhun Demirov, Vedat Erincin, Billey Demirtas and Daniel Drewes complete an ensemble built around the prison's competing factions.

Context & significance

Directed by Martin Hawie and Laura Harwarth and released in 2021, Future Is a Lonely Place is a German production that sits across drama, thriller and crime, closer in tone to a slow character study than an action-driven prison film. Its German setting grounds the story in a specific prison system and its social tensions rather than a generic genre backdrop, and the pacing favors psychological pressure over spectacle.
