Director: Lee Cronin

An estranged pair of sisters, a birthday visit gone wrong, and an ancient book bound in something other than leather turn a Los Angeles apartment into a trap.

What is Evil Dead Rise about?

Beth arrives at her sister Ellie's apartment for what should be a routine visit, only for an earthquake to expose a hidden vinyl record and a cursed book sealed away beneath the building. Once the recording plays, Ellie's own children become vessels for something ancient and hungry, and the two sisters are forced to fight through hallways and stairwells to keep the rest of the family alive. Evil Dead Rise trades the series' usual cabin-in-the-woods setting for a cramped, multi-floor apartment building, using tight corridors to ratchet up the claustrophobia.

Cast & crew

Lily Sullivan carries much of the film as Beth, shifting from reluctant outsider to the family's last line of defense, while Alyssa Sutherland delivers an unsettling physical performance once Ellie is overtaken by the film's central threat. Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols, and Nell Fisher play the children caught in the middle, giving the horror a family stakes that the earlier films in the series didn't always have.

Context & significance

Director Lee Cronin, who previously made the acclaimed Irish horror film The Hole in the Ground, took over the franchise with Evil Dead Rise in 2023, shifting the setting from remote cabins to urban isolation. Filmed largely in New Zealand standing in for Los Angeles, the movie earned strong reviews for its practical effects and its willingness to put children at the center of its scares, a choice that divided some longtime fans of the earlier entries.
