Director: Guan Hu
A quiet stray dog and a recently released ex-convict find each other on the edge of the Gobi Desert in Guan Hu's 2024 drama Black Dog, a film that trades dialogue for atmosphere and lets its wind-scoured landscapes do much of the talking.
What is Black Dog about?
Lang comes home to a half-emptied town in Northwest China after a stretch in prison, arriving just as authorities are rounding up stray dogs ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Work is scarce and his welcome is colder still, so he takes the one job available: patrolling crumbling streets and dry canal beds to catch loose animals before the games bring outside eyes to the region. Among the strays is a wary black dog nobody can get near, and Lang's slow, largely wordless effort to earn its trust becomes the film's real engine. Old grudges from before his sentence resurface, a travelling circus passes through town, and a subplot involving a chained tiger adds an odd, memorable note to the story. Rather than building toward a conventional climax, the film follows Lang and the dog as their guarded routines start to overlap, until neither one is quite as alone as the opening scenes suggested.
Cast & crew
Eddie Peng plays Lang with a controlled, almost silent physicality that carries most of the film's emotional weight. Tong Liya appears as a circus performer who briefly crosses his path, while veteran director Jia Zhangke takes a supporting acting role as a local official, a bit of casting that longtime festival audiences will recognize. Zhang Yi and Yuan Hong round out a cast built around restraint rather than showy performances.
Context & significance
Black Dog premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the top prize in that sidebar, and it later became China's official submission for the Academy Awards' international feature category. Guan Hu shot much of the film on location in Gansu province, using the region's dust storms and abandoned industrial buildings as a backdrop rather than a set. The 2008 Olympics setting gives the story a specific historical texture, a moment when small towns across China were being visibly cleaned up and reordered for an international audience.
