Ab Paria is a 2014 Iranian fantasy-drama-comedy series directed by Marzieh Boroomand, weaving Persian mythology and folklore into a warm, sisterly story about four fairy sisters who must reunite to rescue one of their own from the grip of an ancient drought demon.

What is Ab Paria about?

Every Sizdah Bedar, the four fairy sisters — Abr Pari, Sabz Pari, Barf Pari, and Ab Paria — gather at the eldest sister Barf Pari's home to share a traditional meal, swap stories, and pour out their hearts to each other. This year, however, their youngest sister Ab Paria has not arrived — she has fallen into the clutches of Apoush, the demon of drought and dry spells. Unwilling to let her suffer, the three elder sisters descend from their realm into the human world to find her and bring her home. Along the way they encounter a colorful cast of strangers, each encounter revealing new truths about the world they once watched from above. The journey is equal parts comic and moving, blending mythological quest with the quiet warmth of female friendship and family loyalty.

Director Marzieh Boroomand brings a storyteller's sensitivity to the material, drawing vivid performances from a strong ensemble. Behnaz Jafari anchors the series with her trademark wit and emotional depth. Context & significance

Ab Paria draws from some of the oldest veins of Iranian cosmology, reimagining the pari — fairy-like beings from Persian mythology — as fully realized sisters with personalities, grievances, and genuine affection for one another. For Iranian diaspora viewers, the series carries the warmth of a shared cultural vocabulary: the Sizdah Bedar outing, the ash-e chel daneh, the name Apoush drawn from ancient Avestan texts. It belongs to a proud lineage of Iranian television that uses fantasy to explore contemporary themes of solidarity and resilience, making it equally accessible to viewers discovering Persian storytelling for the first time and to those who grew up with these myths.
