What is A Higher Law about?
Ecaterina teaches religion at the local high school and is married to the town priest, a position that makes her both a moral authority in the classroom and a public figure outside it. Into her class comes Iuliu, a sixteen-year-old whose troubled history has already marked him out among staff and pupils. Ecaterina decides that he needs guidance and takes it upon herself to provide it, drawing him closer in the belief that discipline and attention will settle him. The relationship that develops is not one she can supervise from a safe distance. The harder she works to keep the boy in check, the more her own judgement slips, and the film follows that erosion step by step, as the codes she has spent her life upholding, religious, marital and professional, begin to pull against one another.
About the cast
Mălina Manovici and Alexandru Papadopol lead the cast, joined by Voicu Dumitraș, Richard Bovnoczki, Ana Maria Moldovan, Oana Ștefănescu, Marian Râlea and Gabriel Spahiu. The performances favour understatement, in keeping with a story where what remains unspoken in a household or a staff room carries as much tension as anything said aloud.

A Higher Law is a co-production between Germany, Romania and Serbia and runs a little over two hours at 123 minutes. Its Romanian-language setting places it within a national cinema known internationally for patient, observational storytelling, and the film adopts that register while shaping it into a thriller: the suspense comes less from action than from watching a respectable life tilt out of balance. The title points to the film's central tension, the collision between religious law, social convention and private impulse in a small community where everyone knows everyone else.
