Goli Jaan is a 2021 Iranian comedy film directed by Majid Vahidian, running 94 minutes. Built around the Nowruz holiday and a beloved pet goldfish, the film gently pokes fun at superstition, family rituals, and the chaos that erupts when a cherished lucky charm disappears.
What is Goli Jaan about?
Aziz Khan is a deeply superstitious man who firmly believes his luck is tied to a single red goldfish named Goli Jaan — a gift from his cousin given years ago. Each Nowruz, he performs the same ritual: the family travels to the cousin's orchard, the fish is transferred into a ceremonial bowl, and Goli Jaan takes pride of place on the haft-seen table. Aziz Khan is convinced the fish draws fortune into the household, and the whole family has learned to humor this belief. But on the very first night of the New Year, the fish bowl shatters by accident and Goli Jaan is gone. What follows is a spiraling chain of family mishaps and comic complications, as the whole household is pulled into the fallout of losing its lucky charm just as the holiday begins and the festive mood hangs in the balance.

Context & significance
For Iranian diaspora audiences, Goli Jaan taps into a shared memory of Nowruz preparations — the haft-seen table, the goldfish that every Iranian household traditionally places on it, the road trips to relatives, and the unspoken pressure to keep the holiday atmosphere joyful. Superstition about Nowruz fish and good fortune is common enough that the film's central premise will land immediately with Persian-speaking viewers regardless of where they grew up. The comedy belongs to a proud tradition of Iranian domestic farce: gentle, character-driven, and rooted in real family dynamics rather than slapstick. At 94 minutes it is light and breezy — an easy watch for Nowruz season or any time homesickness calls for something warm and familiar.
