Mashine Ghashangam is a 2022 Iranian comedy film directed by Mohsen Afshani, running 106 minutes. The story centers on a family torn between nostalgia and practicality when a beloved but beat-up old car — a keepsake from the father's brother — becomes the unlikely source of chaos, argument, and unexpected affection.
What is Mashine Ghashangam about?
The patriarch of an ordinary Iranian household has grown deeply attached to an old, battered car that once belonged to his brother. For him, the vehicle is irreplaceable — a physical link to his brother and to a time that cannot be recovered. The rest of the family sees only a rusting eyesore taking up space and causing embarrassment. What begins as a collective effort to quietly dispose of the car quickly unravels into a series of comic misunderstandings, family squabbles, and outright disasters. Each attempt to solve the problem only deepens the mess, revealing buried tensions and long-held grudges beneath the humor. The car, half-wreck and half-memory, refuses to go quietly.

The ensemble includes Ali Sadeghi and Fariba Naderi at the heart of the absurd situation, alongside Maryam AmirJalali and Shahnam Shahabi, whose contrasting energies sharpen the comedy's domestic friction and give the film its lived-in, recognizable warmth.
Context & significance
Iranian family comedies occupy a distinct place in the hearts of Persian-speaking audiences worldwide. Films built around multigenerational household tensions — where a single object or decision unlocks decades of unspoken feeling — have resonated strongly since the 1990s golden era of popular Iranian cinema. Mashine Ghashangam follows squarely in that tradition, mixing slapstick with genuine emotional undercurrents. For diaspora viewers, the setting and dynamic feel deeply familiar: the stubborn father, the exasperated children, the object that stands in for something much larger than itself. It is the kind of film that plays equally well as background noise at a family gathering and as a deliberate sit-down watch.
