Anthony Hopkins plays an ageing man whose grip on time, place and people is slipping, and The Father puts the viewer inside that slippage rather than watching it from a safe distance.
What is The Father about?
Anthony lives in a London flat and insists he can manage on his own. His daughter Anne disagrees, and every carer she arranges is dismissed, accused or simply forgotten. Then the flat itself starts to behave strangely: furniture moves, a stranger claims to be Anne's husband, and Anne herself seems to change face between one room and the next. Florian Zeller's film is built so that the audience shares Anthony's confusion. Conversations loop back on themselves, a watch goes missing and reappears, and days fold into each other without warning. What begins as a familiar story about a stubborn parent and a tired child becomes something closer to a chamber mystery, where the thing under investigation is one man's own mind.
About the cast
Anthony Hopkins leads, with Olivia Colman as the daughter caught between duty and exhaustion. Mark Gatiss, Olivia Williams, Imogen Poots, Rufus Sewell and Ayesha Dharker fill out the small ensemble, several of them appearing in ways that deliberately unsettle the viewer's sense of who is who. The performances stay quiet and precise; nobody is playing for sympathy, which is exactly why the film lands so hard.
Context & significance
Florian Zeller adapted The Father from his own stage play, and the film keeps that theatrical compactness: a handful of rooms, a handful of people, and a running time of ninety-seven minutes. Released in 2020 as a British drama, it was widely admired on its release and became one of the most talked-about English-language films about dementia, largely because it refuses the usual outside-in approach. Instead of explaining the illness, it reproduces its texture through editing, set design and casting choices. Viewers who have cared for an ageing parent often describe the experience as painfully recognisable; others come to it simply for the acting, and leave with both.
